What you learn

What you work on.

Every class puts in rounds on pads or bags, so technique gets tested on something that pushes back.

  1. 01

    Stance and footwork

Where your feet go decides everything else. You learn to stand, move and stay balanced before you throw anything hard.

  2. 02

    Strikes

Punches, kicks, elbows and knees, thrown with proper form so you make power safely and stay protected while you do it.

  3. 03

    Defense

Blocking, parrying, footwork and head movement. Not getting hit matters as much as hitting.

  4. 04

    The clinch

Muay Thai's close range game. Controlling a partner up close, knees and positional control.

Your first class

Three steps in.

  1. Step 01

    Request a class

Pick Tuesday or Thursday at 5:00 PM. Your free 14 days start at your first check in, not when you book.

  2. Step 02

    Learn the base

Stance, footwork and basic strikes with a partner. Nobody gets thrown into sparring.

  3. Step 03

    Hit the pads

Rounds on pads or heavy bags. This is usually where it clicks.

Questions

Before you come in.

Do I need experience?

No. Most people start with none. The class is built so a first timer learns proper technique from day one.

Will I get hit?

Not in a fundamentals class. You work pads, bags and controlled partner drills. Sparring is optional, only for students who have the basics down, and it is light and coached.

Is this cardio kickboxing?

No. You will get a serious workout, but the goal is real skill. If the workout is what you are after, Combat Conditioning on Monday and Wednesday is built for that.

Can teens join?

Yes. Teens 13 to 16 train in the adult classes. Kids 8 to 12 have their own Youth Kickboxing class on Monday and Wednesday.

Can I train jiu jitsu too?

Yes. The $125 All Class Pass covers every eligible class at Fight Mechanix and Great Lakes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, in the same building.

What should I bring?

Comfortable athletic clothes and water. Not sure about gloves or shin guards for your first class? Call (810) 884 3416 and ask.
